AMAZING GRACE MONOLOG
JOHN NEWTON SHARES:
Oh, how blest I was for a while in my life. My mother was a godly, loving mother. She was a women of fragile health, but she was devoted to me and wanted me to come to know the Lord. I knelt at here knees to memorize Bible passages and sing hymns with her. She had many a tearful prayer for me as I knelt there. But then she died when I was only seven.
From there it was a down hill crash. I ended up in the British Navy but I deserted. It did not last long for they found me and flogged me and then they suspended me.
I had learned I loved the sea so I went back and gradually came to the point where I was a captain of a slave ship. One night we were awaken by a storm like I had never been in before. I just knew the ship was about to sink. Years later I wrote, “That tenth of March is a day much remembered by me; and I have never suffered it to pass unnoticed since the year 1748—the Lord came from on high and delivered me out of deep waters.”
I expressed what God had done for me through Christ in the poem God and Christ gave me, Amazing Grace.
