FOR OVER A 100 YEARS EVERYTIME ONE OF HIS HYMNS HAS BEEN SUNG IT HAS TOUCHED LIVES . DON'T YOU WONDER HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE BEEN SAVED OR DRAWN CLOSER TO CHRIST THROUGH ONE OF HIS SONGS? HERE'S JUST A FEW OF THEM:
Wonderful Words of Life words and music
Once For All words and music
Whosoever Will May Come words and music
It Is Well With My Soul music
I Gave My Life For Thee music
HE WAS ON THE STAFF OF CHURCHES AND WORK WITH MANY EVANGELIST IN REVIVALS.
FINALLY, IN 1876, HE TOOK TIME OFF AND WENT TO HIS FOLKS HOME FOR CHRISTMAS WITH HIS WIFE AND TWO LITTLE CHILDREN. WHILE THERE HE RECEIVED A TELEGRAM ASKING HIM TO COME SING IN CHICAGO AT THE MOODY TABERNACLE.
ON DECEMBER 29TH HE AND HIS WIFE, IN THE MIDDLE OF A TERRIBLE SNOW STORM, BOARDED A TRAIN. THREE HOURS LATTER IT WENT OFF A BRIDGE AND PLUNGED 75 FEET INTO THE PIT BELOW.
PHILIP SURVIED THE CRASH BUT LUCY WAS INSIDE AND THOUGH FLAMES BROKE OUT, AND EVERYONE TRIED TO KEEP HIM FROM GOING BACK IN, HE YELLED, "IF I CANNOT SAVE HER, I WILL PERISH WITH HER." AND HE DID.
SEVERAL DAYS LATER THEIR TRUNK ARRIVED IN CHICAGO, AND THIS HIS LAST SONG, THAT NOBODY HAD SEEN, WAS FOUND IN THE TRUNK.
