HYMN AND PRAISE SONG IDEAS
FIRST, MAKE SURE YOUR ACCOMPANIST HAS EACH HYMN IN A NOTE BOOK FOR THE SERVICE! THIS WAY THEY DON'T HAVE TO GO THROUGH THE HYMNAL LOOKING AND DELAY THE FLOW!!! YOU CAN PURCHASE ACCOMPLIMENT NOTEBOOKS AT LIFEWAY.
.Have one verse sung by a soloist and it might be from the congregation area or even have them somewhere where they won't be seen.
.Read a verse together.
.Men one verse the women another based on the words.
.Sing the chorus only after all the verses have been sung.
.Use an off-stage voice to sing the chorus as the introduction to hymn.
.Have an instrument play a verse as a solo while everyone reads the verse silently.
.Tie praise songs to the hymns either as introductions or as additional thoughts at the end.
.Interpretive movement or sign language.
.Visualize with slides or a video tape.
.Have a testimony, which is about the theme of the hymn, during the hymn. A good hymn for this is Standing on the Promises.
.Modulate to give more fullness if the last verse calls for it.
.Have contrasting tempos and styles between hymns.
.The verbal introduction to a hymn should cause the congregation to want to sing the hymn, know why the hymn was chosen. This introduction can be a line from the hymn, how it ties into the rest of the service, a scripture, a story of why the hymn was written, so home cause the worshipper to want to sing the hymn.
.Sing in unison with free accompaniment. Victory In Jesus last verse and let it rip.
.Go from one song to the next either because it is in the same key or with a modulation.
.You might sing the chorus to another song without turning pages because everyone knows the words. Marvelous Grace into Amazing Grace, and they are same pages.
.All the verses do not have to be sung if they do not fit the theme of the worship service.
.Obbligato parts by the instruments or vocalist add to the words.
.Repeat the final words of a hymn. Blessed Redeemer,?Dying for me, dying for me, dying for me. Get softer with each phrase. Unaccompanied the last time.
.Or, When We All Get To Heaven, And the last phrase is, We will all sing and shout the victory Sing it three times softer each time or louder each time.
.Echo a phrase? Are You Washed In the Blood? The women sing the first and third phrase while the men echo, ?Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb"?.
.Medleys on the same theme and many times there are hymns in the same key side by side in the hymnal. Side by side songs are listed on page 41.
.Hymns that are different such as
Subjective What A Friend We Have In Jesus
Objective To God Be the Glory
Exciting Stand Up Stand Up For Jesus
Calming I Need Thee Every Hour
.Be sensitive to each verse and sing it as the words call for it to be sung. Even in a verse the phrases may need different singing volume. Jesus Saves the third verse goes from soft to loud, Sing it softy to "Sing in triumph the tomb", and sing this with force.
.Sermon In Song Section gives lots of ideas.
.Hymn story dramatized in the Hymn Story Drama Section.
.Have a family choir lead the congregation in worship.
