First, only 25% of Oklahoma Southern Baptist will attend a worship service this Sunday. Is that shocking or what? We have got to do all we can do to help worshippers incounter God when they come.
One of the things that can help is the introduction to the hymn. "Take your hymnal and turn to 364," doesn´t get it done. So why introduce and hymn and how.
First, you keep in short, short, short. Second, you say something that will either make them want to sing the hymn, search for something in the hymn, or know why they are singing the hymn.
Why in the world did you choose this hymn? Where does it fit in the service? What does it have to do with the songs that surrond it? Where are we going from here?
The short answer to any of those questions can be an introduction. THERE HAS GOT TO BE A REASON FOR SINGING A SONG MORE THAN YOU LIKE IT, THEY LIKE, WE HAVEN´T SUNG IT IN A WHILE, OR MISS JONES HAS ASKED FOR IT THREE TIMES THIS WEEK!!!
Other ways to introduce a hymn is by quoting a scripture and most hymns have a scripture under the title. The story behind the hymn is great to tell, but again, keep it short!!! Perhaps quoting a line from the hymn will be a good way to introduce the hymn. WHATEVER YOU DO, GIVE THEM A REASON FOR SINGING THE WORDS.
In the next few weeks we will give some examples of the various ways to introduce a hymn. BETTER STILL, WHY DON´T YOU SEND US IDEAS ABOUT THE INTRODUCTION OF A HYMN!!!
