As we sing this song can you get some idea of the back-ground of the person who wrote it. How deep did he go in his troubles and trials?
Sing the first verse of AT CALVARY...
William Newell had such deep mental problems his folks didn't know what to do. Finally, they ask the president of Moody Bible Institute if he could go to school there and be under his council. The presidents response was that it was a school not a reformatory. Finally, he told the family that if William would come to his office everyday of the week, and abide by the rules, he could come to the school. There he found Jesus as his Savior.
Sing the second verse...
He did keep the rules, and he did go to the president's office. And believe it of not, years later he begame a loved professor at Moody Bible Institute.
Sing the third verse...
Years later, he began to write his testimony, then one day these words began to flood his mind and he ducked into an empty classroom and wrote them down as fast as he could. As he hurried on to his class he happened to run into Dr. Daniel Towner, the director of music at the
institute He told him that the words might make a good song. When he came out of his class the Dr. Towner gave him the music to this hymn we have been singing. His comment to William was, "I feel that this will be the best song that either of us will ever write in our lifetime."
